Down on the Allotment

Matron grows vegetables and fruit in a Hampshire garden. I've been growing veggies since I was knee high to a grasshopper. Some traditional varieties and old favourites as well as new ideas. I share my garden with my allotment assistant Daisy the Labrador. On Twitter as @MatronsVeggies

Matron's Vegetable Olympics!

Welcome to the vegetable olympics! It was raining all day today, so as I could not go out onto the veggie patch I sat indoors and got creative! It is a really great thing to eat as many different coloured fruit and veggies every day, and this time of year there is plenty to choose from.
In the spirit of the olympics.. can you think of any of your veggies which are FASTER, HIGHER OR STRONGER than any others? Answers please.

The things gardeners get up to when they can't get out into the garden!
I'll enter my Courgette 'Firenze' for the sprint, fastest growing thing on one stalk.

Cool Matron I enter our Daikon and nettles(i'ts winter here)
Both are strong, fast growing and have great health properties and taste great when prepared properly.

I think our 'Salford Black' Runner Beans are a contenders for 'Higher' - give them a pole vault pole and it will be over the top "no problem"!!!!

'Stronger' - how about freshly dug Horseradish!

'Faster' - there's nothing that grows faster than a courgette when your back is turned!

LOL
Celia :)

The rings are fab!!!

Celia, three excellent nominations! I wonder just how high a runner bean would grow if you gave it a stick big enough??

In addition to FASTER, HIGHER and STRONGER, can we add BIGGER to the olympic list? I have been lucky enough to grow tomatoes over 1.5 pounds and beans 2 feet long! I was inspired by your very creative post and wrote a post about these giant veggies as an answer.

Great post Matron!

Thanks all for your contributions, I must nominate my climbing beans BLAUHILDE in the 'higher' category. Not only have they raced up to the top of an 8ft pole, they have made at least another 8ft crawling everywhere else and they are still going. I wonder just how high they would go if I let them?

What a fantastic picture!! I have mainly herbs in my garden (not quite enough sun or space for veggies), but I'd have to say my serrano pepper plants are definitely contenders for "stronger." They seem to flourish during drought, heavy rain, and horrid heat! My lemon balm is also out of control - it's definitely a fast one. :)

I nominate my French Breakfast radish for the first to pop up out of the ground during spring time planting. Can always count on a radish coming through ;)

Great idea for a blog Matron!

Great pic!

In the Eddie the Eagle spirit of the Olympics, I nominate my courgette plant for SLOWEST vegetable, my failed okra for LOWEST and my celeriac for WEAKEST.

Got any wooden spoons?

I'd like to nominate bindweed for 'faster' (sadly) and my French Beans (Cherokee Trail of Tears) for 'higher'. Stronger, possibly the chillies ;>)
